VBS POST WL STORY
the things you love will always be a part of you. whether they are people or objects, meeting them will always change some part of you, or fuel you.
"i too, want to sing, together with akito"
"but i feel like i can't ever be by your side with such half hearted feelings"
in toya's own chapter and in his side story, the theme of "regret" was brought up quite a bit. the idea of "there will be regrets in life, but it is up to you to choose what you want to do in the present to change things", and "there will always be mistakes, but what matters most is moving forward with no regrets". for toya, it was overcoming his fears for just this one moment, to come to terms with his feelings. to acknowledge that he hurt akito, but to not regret not finding closure for the rest of his life because of his fears.
there will be mistakes that will be hard to forgive — especially if the person you trust the most crushed your dreams. however, the important part about this “what if” wasn’t really about forgiveness, but rather it was about reconciliation and forming closure for both parties, who still love everything about the days they were together. what’s done has been done.
toya coming forward to talk to akito in person, is part of forming that closure for himself and for akito. it is part of letting go of all those regrets he had before, and moving forward towards the future without being chained by all these “what if” questions. if natsuomi never gave toya that push, he may not have ever gained this sense of security.
towards the end, just like when he first sang with akito, he relished in that warmth, the passion, the energy. it was just like the first time he discovered the world of street music, the color and joy. he sang for the first time in a long while, wondering why he hasn’t been singing if it brought him so much joy.
and of course, that vbs main story reference — “you’re such an idiot… i guess you love music to death after all don’t you”
once again it tells us, toya never really wanted to let go. he has always loved music, and he always wants to be with music, together with the people he loves.
